Completion Criteria let you control exactly when a course counts as completed — and what happens to that status if the course content changes later. 🎯
Find it under Studio → Courses → [open a course] → Settings → Completion Criteria.
Completion Criteria modes
There are four modes to choose from:
Off — progress is not tracked and the course can never be completed. Use this for reference courses that learners can browse freely without a formal completion state.
Static — a course is completed when the learner reaches 100% progress and the date of the last scheduled event has passed. Once completed, the status stays completed even if new content is added to the course.
Progress is still recalculated when content is added (so a completed learner may show less than 100% progress), but their completion status is never removed. Use Static when content updates should not affect already-completed learners.
Dynamic — uses the same 100%-progress logic as Static, but completion is always tied to current progress. If new content is added, learners who had completed the course will move back to In Progress and the course will reappear in their active course list.
After adding content in Dynamic mode, re-publish the course to push changes to enrolled learners: click the green Published button and select Publish again.
Use Dynamic when it's important that all learners — including those who already completed the course — work through any new content.
Manual approval — progress is tracked the same way as in Static and Dynamic, but it does not determine completion. Instead, an Admin or Content Designer manually marks each learner as passed or failed.
Static progress toggle
Both Static and Manual Approval modes include a Static progress toggle. When enabled, learners who have already completed the course will have their progress frozen at 100%. If new content is added after completion, their progress percentage stays locked — it is not recalculated downward.
This setting only applies to learners with a Completed status. Learners who have not yet completed the course continue to have their progress tracked normally.
