Follow learners' progress in a course

Follow learners' progress in a course: the overview in the Learners tab and the details per learner in the Progress tab.

Written by Robin Janevret

When your learners have been assigned and started working on a course, you'll want to follow their progress. This article shows where to find it and what you can do there. 🔄

You follow your learners' progress in two tabs on the course: Learners gives an overview of everyone, and Progress shows each learner's progress in detail.

Get a progress overview

In the tab Learners, you'll find an overview of the progress :

  1. Go to Studio and open your course.

  2. Click on the tab Learners.

  3. You'll see the Learner progress in percentage in the Status column (see image below).

In the tab Learners you can:

  • See each learner's progress as a percentage and their course status.

  • Send messages, individually or to everyone.

  • Mark a learner as completed. What this does depends on the course's completion criteria: with Static or Manual approval the learner becomes Completed; with Dynamic, all activities are marked as done, but the learner shows Events scheduled while the end date or booked event slots are still ahead, and In progress while a Multi Event block is unbooked. With completion criteria Off, learners can't be marked as completed.

  • Mark a learner as passed or failed. This is only available with Manual approval completion criteria.

  • Reset a learner's progress with Set Progress to 0%.

  • Download an attendance list or a progress report.

ℹ️ If your workspace has the Modify Progress and Course Status course setting, it decides who may change a learner's progress and status on that course: everybody with access to the participants, only chosen roles, or nobody. Every manual change is logged with who made it.

For detailed progress

In the tab Progress, you can follow your Learners on a very detailed level – all the way down to what page they're done with and their quiz results. You can also reset pages and, if someone seems stuck, you can send them an encouraging direct message. 📣

  1. Go to Studio and open your course in the list.

  2. Click on the tab Progress.

  3. Click on a Learner in the list.

  4. Check the progress in the list on the right hand side.

In Progress you can:

  • See which activity pages the learner has finished, and their quiz and survey answers.

  • Send a direct message to the learner.

  • Use the menu on a page in the learner's outline to Mark as Complete (shown when the page isn't completed yet).

  • Use the same menu to reset a page back to no progress (shown when the page has any progress). The option is called Reset Activity, Reset Assignment, Reset Quiz or Reset Survey, depending on the type of page.

  • Download a progress report.

ℹ️ The page menu is available when you're allowed to mark learners as done and the course isn't archived. The Progress tab is only available on courses built in Learnster.

To reset a learner's whole course in one step, use Set Progress to 0% instead of resetting each activity.

ℹ️ To view quiz and survey results, click on them in the list to open up the responses.

What the progress percentage means

Progress is the share of the course's activities the learner has passed. Only passed activities count: a failed quiz or an assignment waiting for review adds nothing, and events don't count at all. Activities in blocks that aren't published yet also count toward the total, so nobody can reach 100% until those blocks are published or removed.
